Arkle from the approach
Road
Arkle 787 m
The approach to Arkle from Achfary is
over very good estate tracks and makes a for a pleasant
stroll through stunning scenery. However as I seem to do every
time the approach is easy I went storming past the turn left just
after the bothy at Lone. For the record its only about 50 yards past
the bothy,
if you miss the turn you will
have to go back or get
very wet crossing the burn because you will have missed the bridge!
The climb only starts once you are into the
woods, from then its a quite easy although the path is not clear and
its a bit ankle
twisting over the stoney bits. There are
great views from the first summit
and from there the route continues much the same to the summit.
I was in the clouds by now but they kept
breaking to give good views. From the summit you can continue via a
narrow ridge to a further, slightly lower summit. On the exposure
scale I would give it 6/10, had the weather been better I think I
would have given it a go. However there was a very strong wind
blowing and as I approached the ridge
the wind was sweeping in through the
narrows at a tremendous rate, I
could hardly stand up, so I decided to leave to another day.
Return is by the same route.
Time taken about 6 hours., but I was not
rushing in hope the weather would improve!
