Ben Stack from the road approaching
Achfary.
Ben
Stack 719 m
A very nice walk which starts to rise
straight from the road. Starting near Stack Lodge the path is a well
worn Land Rover track as far as Loch na Seilge, where at a gate
post, turn left and take the the path which follows the line of the
fence. (My guide book says there is a cairn and a faint path - just
another example of a guide book that looks like the writer has never
been near
the place, why mention a cairn, which
I could not find and not
mention the fence. Its the only one and clearly is not new)!
From here on its a steepish climb up mainly
grass banks. I must have lost the path nearer the top and I
ended up scrambling for a bit until
I found the path again, its
quite a good path so I don't know how I missed it!
The final approach to the summit is on a good
path which opens up to a ridge which gives a bit of exposure, about
2/10 on the exposure scale! (I know
you people who trot along the ridges
on Skye and stand on pinincles
must think I'm a total wimp - I just don't do exposure)!
At the summit there
is a cairn, followed by a
strange solar powered ariel, then a bit further on the trig point.
I was doing a round trip so I carried on, the
path past the summit is easy to find, this leads you onto a much
less steep grassy slope, at the base of the slope you join the
Leathad na Stioa back. The path is clear at first but I soon lost
it. I'm not sure if there is a better path. The route I took felt
right, just keep
on going down! I found bits of
what appeared to be a path
but nothing much until quite low, were the path is much clearer.
Head towards the left side of the forest
above Achfary and you won't go wrong. The path emerges
onto the road and its a three
mile walk back to the starting
point. However its a very nice loch side walk and soon passes.
If you choose to start from the
Achfary end look for the path which
starts from the passing place immediately
before the private road on the right (the road leading to Arkle).
Summit ridge and cairn
Time taken about 4 hours on the hill and
another hour on the road.
