Final approach to Ben Hee summit.

Ben Hee 873 m

Ben Hee is not a very popular mountain, as the approach is not very dramatic, so if you like solitude its the place to go!

Take the Land Rover track from the A838 until it reaches the Allt Coir a Chruiteir burn, the Estate have been doing a bit of work here, so the ground is disturbed. You need to turn right onto an old stalkers path, however its not clear were to turn, just take the right bank at the first crossing of the burn. It will not be long before you find the track. Most guide books tell you to follow this track, which is correct, however the track has collapsed into the burn at, at least eight locations, so be prepared for some diversions and crossings of the burn. (And getting your feet wet)!  I would guess that if the burn was in full spate, the route would be quite difficult.

After the fifth diversion from the path I decided to turn right and climb up to the saddle between Meallan Liath Mor and Ben Hee, at this point its a quite steep climb, I would suggest you continue to look for the stalkers path (you will need to cross the burn a few times), until the ground in front of you starts to rise very much more steeply, then turn right up the easier and shorter route to the saddle.

From the saddle the route to the summit is quite easy, wide and open. (unless, like the late April day I chose, its under three feet of snow, when it can be quite a struggle)!

For the return I went straight down from the summit to the Allt Coir a Chruiteir burn, I would not recommend this option, the heather and rock surface makes for uncomfortable walking, better going back to the saddle and dropping down from there.

Unfortunatley, despite an excellent weather forcast, there was low cloud and the promised views were never seen!

View from the summit!

Time taken about 5 hours.
