Ben Hope from the
North
Ben
Hope (927m)
Quite a short walk, the return trip taking
only about 4 hours. Very well worn paths on the lower section. I was
lucky as I did the walk
after several weeks of dry weather,
however I would guess that normally the lower section is very boggy.
No problems anywhere, the paths
are easy to follow, the second
half is over a long steep slope with cairns to guide you.
There is
even a large sign at the lay-by pointing you to the path!
There is a second route up, starting 2 miles
nearer Altnaharra which avoids the boggy approach. I did use this
route over 20 years ago. The guide books all give details, however
none mention crossing the burn a few hundred feet up. As I recall it
was quite difficult and there
was a
memorial plaque to someone who had died there a few years before.
The single track road from Altnaharra is
very narrow, the passing places are
overgrown and there are no passing
place signs, I would not like to tackle it in the snow!

Time taken about 4.5 hours.
