Looking back at Ben Wyvis from Tom a' Choinnich.

Ben Wyvis 1046m

Access is gained from the the A835 road to Ullapool. We did this assent on a wonderful clear blue sky day in October with thick snow covering from the road up and over every surrounding hill.

The walk starts with  gentle climb along forest tracks, this turns into a steeper climb up to the first summit. I think the path zig zags up, however the snow was too deep for us to be able to see the path, so we went straight up!

From the first summit its an easy walk to the main summit. Overall a very nice walk, not too difficult and wonderful views from the top.

On a second visit, this time in spring with no snow, I found that Forest Enterprise had constructed a new car park for walkers - very handy.

This time I was able to find the correct path which makes for an easy climb. Once at the summit I continued on to Tom a'Choinnich, which is the start of an alternative route back to the car park. The round trip makes for an interesting walk, but its a bit hard going, the path is very intermittent and the walk down from Tom a'Choinnich, although over grassy slopes is harder than it looks.

My trip was after many weeks of fine weather, I would guess that under normal conditions, the route would be quite boggy.

This alternative route is nothing like a Highland hill walk, more like a walk in the Chievots!

An Cabar, Ben Wyvis's southern outpost from the approach path.

Time taken about 6 hours.
