The approach to Seana Bhraigh.
Seana
Bhraigh 926m
Seana Bhraigh, in Ross-shire is one of
the top three most remote Munro's in Scotland. The approach is from
the Oykle Bridge Hotel. Take the road just opposite the hotel after
passing a few houses the road turns into a track, which gives a
wonderful nine mile drive to Corriemulzie Lodge. Although its a
track, you don't need a 4-wheel drive, provided you don't care too
much about your suspension!
Just before the Lodge there is an area
marked as parking for walkers, stop there and walk up to the Lodge,
this is prime hunting country so its best to check at the lodge, to
let them know you are there.
Carry on through the gate past the
lodge and follow the track along Strath Mulzie. There are lots
of streams flowing across the track and eventually you will
reach a crossing of the Corriemulzie River. This crossing can be
a bit difficult, however there are crossing stones, you will get
your boots wet, but with a bit of care you should manage it. The
path continues to the bothy at Loch a' Choire Mhoir. If you are not
using the bothy, the guide books tell you to cross the river again at
the head of the loch before you reach the bothy. It was here that I
had some difficulty, crossing the river may be fine, however its
wide and very dark, peaty water. Now I'm sure loads of people have
just walked across, but to me it looks very dodgy! I really did not
want to get water in my boots, its a long way back from here even
without going up the mountain! I had noticed a path just before the
first crossing of the Corriemulzie River, so I decided to go back
there.
Once back over the river turn
left onto a good track, this track soon ends but a footpath continues,
its not easy to follow but I just decided to keep going up, going
is not too bad and after a while you arrive at a rocky plateau. From
here the accent to the summit is obvious, keep to the left, its
a rocky climb but if taken easy not too much of a
problem.
The return trip from the car park is about 7
hours.
